Third Designated Area Migration Agreement for Northern Territory

New Designated Area Migration Agreement (NT DAMA III)

The Northern Territory introduced its third DAMA on 19 March 2025, which will be in effect until 30 June 2030.

The program remains suspended for new endorsement applications whilst the transition to the new NT DAMA III is processed. Once the DAMA III is implemented, the following is a general overview.

This agreement allows employers in the Northern Territory to access an additional 1,500 overseas workers annually across an expanded occupation list.

The new agreement also features a streamlined applications processes for NT employers.

What is a DAMA?

A DAMA is a formal arrangement between the Commonwealth of Australia and a designated area representative (DAR), which may include state or territory governments or regional bodies. This agreement enables designated areas to access a wider range of overseas workers than standard skilled visa programs, allowing for variations in occupation and skills lists, as well as negotiable concessions to visa requirements.

Eligibility Criteria for DAMA

To participate in the Northern Territory DAMA, employers must meet specific criteria:

  • Employer Sponsorship: Individuals cannot apply directly for a DAMA. They must be sponsored by an employer operating in the designated region for an occupation specified in the head agreement.
  • Demonstrated Efforts: Employers must show that they have made genuine efforts to recruit local Australians before seeking overseas workers.
  • Occupation Requirements: The occupations must be listed in the DAMA agreement, which includes a diverse range of roles across various industries.

For detailed information on the eligible occupations, you can refer to the NT DAMA occupations list or contact us. If you’re interested in exploring more about skilled migration options, check out Skilled Migration.

Benefits of the Northern Territory DAMA

The Northern Territory DAMA offers several advantages for both employers and skilled migrants:

  • Access to Skilled Workers: Employers can fill critical skill shortages in their businesses, ensuring operational efficiency.
  • Pathway to Permanent Residency: Workers sponsored under the DAMA may have a pathway to permanent residency after fulfilling specific conditions, such as working with an endorsed employer for a designated period.
  • Support for Regional Development: By attracting skilled workers, the DAMA contributes to the economic growth and sustainability of the Northern Territory. For more information on work visa options, visit Work Visas.
