Focusing on a safer Sydney for international students

Yesterday Police hosted an expert forum to share ideas and discuss ongoing improvements to the safety, well-being and experience of international students in Sydney.

The International Education Provider Forum provided an opportunity for Education institutions, Government officials, and International education service providers to discuss ways to improve the overall experience for international students.

Education providers were led by contributors from police, Australian Trade Commission (Study in Australia), City of Sydney, Fire & Rescue NSW, Department of Fair Trading, International Education Association and Redfern Legal Centre.

NSW Police Corporate Sponsor for International Students, Detective Superintendent Gavin Dengate, said the forum aims to address the challenges faced by International Students living in NSW.

“We have developed numerous programs and initiatives which focus on safety and developing strong relationships with students and education providers,” Det Supt Dengate said.

“While safety is always a priority, we are also working with other agencies to address other important issues, including language and cultural barriers, and feelings of social isolation.

“The forum will focus on wellbeing, particularly the feeling of belonging and connecting with the community, and helping international students to feel like Sydney is their home.

“We want students to have the best possible experience of studying, living and working here,” Det Supt Dengate said.

In addition, City of Sydney International Student intern, Linnea Waestberg, will highlight her experiences while living in Sydney.
